What is miswak?
The miswak is a twig that is chewed on for dental hygiene. It is commonly used in Muslim countries and has been used for centuries.
There are many different types of miswak, but they all come from the Salvadora persica tree. The twigs are cut to size and then chewed on until they are soft.
The miswak can be used like a toothbrush in the state of Ihram and throughout your Hajj or Umrah journey.
History of miswak
The use of the miswak was recommended by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and so its use is considered to be part of the sunnah.
In a hadith, it is reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Were it not for the fear that it would be hard on my nation, I would have ordered them to brush their teeth with the miswak before every prayer.”
The practice of using the miswak has been passed down through the generations of Muslims, and is still widely practiced today.
There are many benefits to using the miswak, including reducing plaque and gingivitis. It is also thought to be effective in preventing cavities and bad breath. It is also thought to be more effective than toothbrushes in removing plaque. In addition, the miswak has antiseptic properties that can help to prevent gum disease.
The benefits of using miswak are not just limited to dental hygiene. Some studies have shown that the miswak can also help with digestive problems, stress relief, and headaches. It is even being investigated as a possible treatment for cancer.
How to use miswak
The best way to use the miswak is to chew on it for about 10 minutes after every meal. You can also use it to brush your teeth. Be sure to rinse your mouth well after using the miswak to remove any residue.
