The Prophet’s Hajj ﷺ
On the Day of Arafat, during the Farewell Hajj, the Prophet ﷺ stayed in a tent at Nimrah. His wives camped in tents around him. When the sun came down from its meridian, he sent for his she-camel, al-Qaswa. He then rode into the interior of Wadi Uranah, where his companions were able to gather around him. He arrived at the bottom of the valley and, seated on his camel, addressed his companions with a powerful sermon. This speech is now known as Khutbat al-Wida (Arabic: خطبة الوداع; “The Farewell Sermon”).
After combining the Dhuhr and Asr prayers, the Prophet ﷺ proceeded to Arafat and performed Wuquf there.
The whole of Arafat is a mawqif, except the middle of Uranah, and the whole of Muzdalifah is a standing place, except for the middle of Muhassir.
[Narrated in Muwatta Malik]
Masjid Nimra
Today, a mosque, Masjid Nimra, stands in this area. The front of the mosque, which extends beyond the boundary of Arafat, is where the Prophet ﷺ delivered the sermon and combined the Dhuhr and Asr prayers thereafter.
Expedition of Abdullah ibn Unais
This valley is additionally recognized for being the site of Abdullah ibn Unais’s I
expedition in 4 AH (625 CE). In response to reports suggesting that Khalid ibn Sufyan was contemplating an attack on Madinah and inciting hostilities against Muslims at Nakhlah or Uranah, the Prophet ﷺ dispatched Abdullah ibn Unais to assassinate him.
Abdullah narrates that the Prophet ﷺ summoned him, saying:
I have received intelligence that Khalid ibn Sufyan al-Hudhali has amassed a force to assault Madinah. He is currently stationed at Uranah or Nakhla. Proceed there and eliminate him. Upon encountering him, you will experience a sense of trembling.
Abdullah ibn Unays recollects:
Upon reaching Khalid, he asked referring to me, ‘Who is this individual?’ I replied, ‘I am an Arab from the Banu Khuzaymah tribe who has heard of your preparations against Rasulullah ﷺ.’ Khalid affirmed his intentions and invited me to his tent, where he offered me some milk to drink. Subsequently, he instructed me to rest in the adjacent tent. That very night, I entered his tent and fulfilled the task of eliminating him. Afterwards, I sought refuge in a cave and clandestinely returned to Madinah. Upon my arrival, Rasulullah ﷺ remarked, ‘You have accomplished your mission successfully.’
He then presented Khalid’s head before the Prophet ﷺ, who rewarded him with his staff, declaring:
This shall serve as a token between you and me on the Day of Qiyamah.
Upon Abdullah bin Unays’s demise, he instructed that the staff be interred with him, wrapped in his burial shroud.
