The following Hadiths highlight two incidents where a difference of opinion arose among the companions and how the Prophet ﷺ dealt with each scenario:
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَسْمَاءَ، حَدَّثَنَا جُوَيْرِيَةُ بْنُ أَسْمَاءَ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ قَالَ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَوْمَ الأَحْزَابِ “ لاَ يُصَلِّيَنَّ أَحَدٌ الْعَصْرَ إِلاَّ فِي بَنِي قُرَيْظَةَ ”. فَأَدْرَكَ بَعْضُهُمُ الْعَصْرَ فِي الطَّرِيقِ، فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ لاَ نُصَلِّي حَتَّى نَأْتِيَهَا. وَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ بَلْ نُصَلِّي، لَمْ يُرِدْ مِنَّا ذَلِكَ، فَذُكِرَ ذَلِكَ لِلنَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَلَمْ يُعَنِّفْ وَاحِدًا مِنْهُمْ.
Ibn Umar narrated: On the day of Al-Ahzab the Prophet ﷺ said, “None of you Muslims should offer the Asr prayer until you reach Banu Quraiza.” The Asr prayer became due for some of them on the way. Some of them said, “We will not offer it until we reach Banu Quraiza,” while some others said, “No, we will pray at this spot, for the Prophet ﷺ did not mean that for us (i.e. he didn’t mean we should skip the prayer).” Later on, it was mentioned to the Prophet ﷺ and he did not criticise any of the two groups.

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الْمُسَيَّبِيُّ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ نَافِعٍ، عَنِ اللَّيْثِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ بَكْرِ بْنِ سَوَادَةَ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ، عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيِّ، قَالَ خَرَجَ رَجُلاَنِ فِي سَفَرٍ فَحَضَرَتِ الصَّلاَةُ وَلَيْسَ مَعَهُمَا مَاءٌ فَتَيَمَّمَا صَعِيدًا طَيِّبًا فَصَلَّيَا ثُمَّ وَجَدَا الْمَاءَ فِي الْوَقْتِ فَأَعَادَ أَحَدُهُمَا الصَّلاَةَ وَالْوُضُوءَ وَلَمْ يُعِدِ الآخَرُ ثُمَّ أَتَيَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَذَكَرَا ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقَالَ لِلَّذِي لَمْ يُعِدْ ” أَصَبْتَ السُّنَّةَ وَأَجْزَأَتْكَ صَلاَتُكَ ” . وَقَالَ لِلَّذِي تَوَضَّأَ وَأَعَادَ ” لَكَ الأَجْرُ مَرَّتَيْنِ ”
Abu Sa’id al-Khudri رضي الله عنه said: “Two persons set out on a journey. Meanwhile, the time of prayer came and they had no water. They performed tayammum with clean earth and prayed. Later on, they found water within the time of the prayer. One of them repeated the prayer and ablution but the other did not repeat. Then they came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and related the matter to him. Addressing himself to the one who did not repeat, he said: ‘You followed the sunnah and your (first) prayer was enough for you.’ He said to the one who performed ablution and repeated: ‘For you, there is the double reward.'”
