Musafir
- An individual will only be regarded as a Musafir after making a firm intention of travelling 77 km (48 miles) or more from his current location.
- If the individual travels from place to place, intending to travel less than 77 km (48 miles) between each location, he will not be considered a Musafir.
- The individual will only be considered a Musafir after leaving the boundaries of his town or city. Until then, he will still be regarded as a Muqim.
- If a person makes an intention of remaining in a particular place for 15 days or more, he will be regarded as a Muqim and must offer salah as normal i.e. perform four rak’ahs for Dhuhr, Asr and Isha.

Assalamualaikum.
I’m writing to ask for clarifications regarding prayer as a traveller. I am planning to travel to Seoul for 19 days which is more than 4000km from my own country. However, my schedule is as follows:
2 days in Seoul, followed by 2 days in Gangneung (more than 100km away from Seoul)
8 days in Seoul, 1 day trip in Busan (also more than 100km away from Seoul) followed by 6 days in Seoul.
Im not sure if I am able to perform Jama’ or Qasr prayers in this case because I am not in one area for 15 days consecutively but overall I am overseas for more than 15 days. Please help in this regard.
Another question regarding Qasr and Jama’ prayers is that once I have the intention to do these prayers does it mean I am not allowed to do normal prayers overseas? Does every prayer have to then be Qasr?
Lastly, am I allowed to pray Qasr/Jama’ on this trip if I am on a moving vehicle that will not be able to stop during the prayer times? Thank you in advance. Sorry for the very specific question!
Wa’alaikum As-Salaam,
I just read this today and replying to it according to Hanafi School of Jurisprudence. Hope you had already received your answer though.
Since you are travelling beyond 78KM and not in one place consecutively for 15days then you would be considered a ‘Traveler’ within Hanafi Fiqh.
As a traveler if you are performing your individual prayers then you would shorten the 4 Fard (obligatory) Rakaats (units) of Zuhr, ‘Asr, and ‘Isha to 2 Fard Rakaats. All other Waajib, Sunnah, and Nafil Rakaats remain the same (e.g. 4 Sunnah of Zuhr would be performed as full 4 Sunnah by the traveler; no shortening of non-Fard units)
However, if you are performing prayer in Congregation (Jama’) behind a local Imam then you would follow the Imam as normal; if he is leading in 4 Rakaats Fard then you would pray 4 Rakaats behind him.
Yes you are allowed to pray in moving vehicle provided the conditions of establishing the prayers are met (e.g Time, Cleanliness, Qibla,, Wudu, necessary covering of Body, etc).
Even with the above explanation I recommend you refer to a local Islamic Scholar for additional clarity.
